きのう見た『ブリジットジョーンズの日記 きれそうなわたしの12か月』で出てきたフレーズ。
『さっと使える英語表現1100』でたまたま見かけたばかりの表現だったので、今日、もう一回見直している時に、聞こえて来ました。昨日は聞き逃してました。
最後の方の場面です。
「で、その情報は誰から聞いたの？」と聞かれたブリジットが
「彼からよ。本人の口から直接」と答えた時に使われていました。

look a gift horse in the mouth(もらい物にけちをつける)と同様、馬の年齢を調べるにはまず口をあけて歯を見る ことから来た言い方のようです。

In determing the age of physical condition of most animals, it is a common paractice to check their teeth. It's like checking the engine of a car to see what kind of condition it is in. That's where the old English saying "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" comes from.
After all, to Americans, a gift horse is expected to have only a few teeth left; it won't be surprising if it has no teeth left at all. -- S. Ray Mori,

なるほどー、辞書には
馬の年齢を調べるにはまず口をあけて歯を見るので、「贈り物としてもらった馬の口の中を見る」ということは相手の好意を疑うような、たいへん失礼な行為にあたるわけであるとあるだけでしたが、
gift horseには歯がないこともある
のですねぇ。面白い説明をありがとうございました。
