NHK海外ドラマの『デスパレートな妻たち』の1回目を見逃してしまい、今、スクリプトを読んでいるところです。
割とよく見かけるfrom scratch というフレーズが、完璧な専業主婦Breeに関して、自殺したMaryAliceが語る場面で使われていました。
scratchの名詞は、ひっかくこと、かくこと 以外に、
スタートライン の意味もあり、「（途中でなく）スタートラインから始める」が転じて、広く「最初から・ゼロから（始める）」の意味で使われるようです。
料理の場合、インスタント食品を使わずに最初から全部自分で作る という意味で使われ、ペーパーバックとか映画でよく見かける気がします。

料理の場合、インスタント食品を使わずに最初から全部自分で作る という意味で使われ、ペーパーバックとか映画でよく見かける気がします。
もちろん、料理以外でも使われます。↓は少し前の選挙の記事からの例文です。
"I'd must ask (voters) if they still want Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's reforms," she said. "I don't have any support group (in Tokyo), so I have to start from scratch. But I want to win (the election) fairly by explaining our political policy."

あとでちょっと思い出して『We'll meet again』をAmazon.comで検索したら、モリーが釈放された後の場面で使われてました。
