昨日たまたま読んだ記事でturn a blind eye to 〜（見て見ぬふりをする）というフレーズが出てきたので、少し前の週刊STの見て見ぬふりはもうしない：Showing that you careという記事を思い出しました。

「見て見ぬふり」は、look the other way とかturn a blind eye to 〜とも訳されるようです。

○彼はどんな小さな不正でも見て見ぬふりができない人だ。He's the kind of person who can't look the other way at even the slightest unfairness.
○深夜の地下鉄の車中で、酔っ払いが女性にからみはじめたのに、すべての乗客は見て見ぬふりをした。It was late at night. Everyone in the subway just looked the other way when the drunk began to bother the woman.

turn a blind eye to、shut one's eyes to　という言い方もあるようです。
asahi press SENTENCEによると、shut [close] one's eyesだけなら「目を閉じる」になってしまうが、次にtoをつけることによって「知っているのにわざと目をつぶる」つまり「頬かぶりする」「見て見ぬふりをする」という比喩的な意味に変わる
のだそうです。


○斉藤さんをはじめとする人々が言っているのは、政府はこういった状況を見て見ぬふりをしているのだが、それは日本の経済にとってこのような労働者が必要であるためだ、ということです。Saito and others say the government turns a blind eye to the situation because the economy needs these workers.
