Keikoさん、よく聞き取っていらっしゃいますね。うちはケーブルテレビで見ているんですけど、録画してみるとどうも、２ヶ国語放送の切り替えがうまくいかなくて、日英同時に音がでて、非常に聞き辛いです。どうしても日本語の方を聞いてしまいます。番組は今現在の日常会話で、得るところが沢山あるんでしょうね。

BSが2カ国語で録れないので、英語のみで見ていますが、登場人物のしぐさ・表情と所々聞き取れる英語で何とか想像しながら見ています。
その後、NHKのエピソードガイドを読んで、「あ、そういうこと！」と思ったり・・・
そうそう、今日、本を読んでいて、「to the nth degree」が出て来て、「あ！」と思いました♪

この表現、学生時代に学校の教材に出てきました。この表現の
変化形 the family skeleton も聞いたことがあります
（Webster３版にはありませんが、『英語諺辞典』（三省堂）には
載っています）。
この話の前後は Brewer's の辞典にありますので、そのまま
転記します。さあ、骸骨とは誰のものだったのでしょう？
The story is that someone without a single care or
trouble in the world had to be found. After long and
unsuccessful search a lady was discovered who all
thought would "fill the bill": but to the great
surprise of the inquirers, after she had satisfied
them on all points and the quest seemed to be
achieved, she took them upstairs and there opened
the closet which contained a human skeleton. "I try",
said she, "to keep my trouble to myself, but every
night my husband compels me to kiss that skeleton."
She then explained that the skeleton was once her
husband's rival, killed in a duel. (Brewer's
Dictionary of Phrase and Fable より引用)

この説明を読むと、骸骨は、妻が好きだった人ということでしょうか？？？
本当に心配事の無い人って、いないのでしょうかね・・・

どうもそのようですね。文面を読むと、自分の
旦那と骸骨になった人物が恋敵みたいです。
決闘後に焼いた？そんなこと許されるのか疑問？
そもそも火葬の習慣があるのかしら？どうせ
作り話でしょうけど。

やっぱりrivalは恋敵なのですね。最初、妻の不倫相手かな とも思ったのですが、どちらにしても、よく考えると、疑問噴出で、あり得ない感じ ですね。
dirty lineの英英辞書からの転記、ありがとうございました。
同じ隠し事にしても、dirty linen ぐらいだと、穏やかでイメージし易いですね。
